On March 28, 2008 an early morning fire gutted the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad Station at Marlinton West Virginia. For the past 20 years, the old depot was home to the Pocahontas County Convention & Visitors Bureau serving as a welcoming beacon to thousands of automobile travelers and bicyclists along the Greenbrier River Trail. Even with the quick response by local fire departments, only ashes remained of office desks, computers, and thousands of files. Along with it, old railroad memorabilia such as telegraph machines, original two-seat wooden desk and secretaries, clerk stations, and the semaphore. Said one elderly gentleman, as he wiped tears from his eyes, “It’s like losing an old friend.” After the shock of losing the Depot, the Board of Directors of the Marlinton Railroad Depot, Inc. held a public meeting to discuss the possibilities and what direction they needed to proceed. The community support was overwhelming to rebuild and the Board voted to reconstruct the Depot as close as possible to the original.
Support for the rebuilding has been great. We will bring you updates, fundraising events, and conceptual drawings as we move towards the rebuilding. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call our office staff.
